Getting Ready
Memories of this experience should last a lifetime. The diligence and effort that you put into preparation will be important. Physical stamina should be one of your priorities. Get into condition. “Holy smoke, that’s a huge buck!” The hurried climb to the ridge above could be a lung-buster. Enough said? Next topic. The hunting gear you bring and your duffle bag contents are of great importance, too.

No doubt you will bring a good rifle with which you have a lot of confidence. Please tell us on arrival that you shot a bunch of practice rounds last month. Expect a knowing smile if an old Winchester Model 70 with a vintage 4X scope slides out of the scabbard. We think (whatever your favorite rifle) you’re good to go when chambered for a big game hunting cartridge capable of minute-of-angle-or-so accuracy. Ethical and sensible cartridges for our hunting would include 30-06’s, 270’s, 7mm’s and various 300’s. Tough bullets for tough game are an important consideration. You shouldn’t go wrong with Nosler Partitions or similar premium bullets. Sight your outfit in for a bit over 200 yards (about +2.5” at 100 yards). Be prepared for shots in the wind and cold at reasonable distances out to around 300 yards. Tales about an antelope slain at 600 yards in Wyoming get no traction with us. Fair enough? Okay, here we go!
